DRDO successfully launches VL-SRSAM missile system

On 22 February 2021, the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) conducted two successful tests of the Vertical Launch Short Range Surface to Air Missile (VL-SRSAM), designed and designed with indigenous technology. This missile system is capable of deactivation when approaching enemy weapons.

The short-range surface-to-air missile (VL-SRSAM) developed indigenously was successfully tested twice. The DRDO said that the ultra-thin missile is capable of eliminating any aerial threat in short distances and will be inducted into the Navy.

The DRDO said that on 22 February 2021, it was tested through a mobile launcher from the ground from the integrated test range at Chandipur. He said that the missile was monitored with a number of radars and electro-optic devices from the launch of the missile to the target in the Bay of Bengal.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the DRDO on the successful test of the missile system VL-SRSAM. DRDO President Dr G Satish Reddy also congratulated the team for successfully testing VL-SR SAM system.

Why was this test

A Defense Ministry statement said that these tests were conducted to test the capability of vertical launch. This was the first test of this kind. In both tests, the missile hit the targets successfully and with full accuracy. The missile was tested for minimum and maximum range. Weapon Control System (WCS) was also fitted with VL-SRSAM during the test.

The background

DRDO is continuously developing advanced missiles. Akash NG was successfully launched from Odisha coast on 25 January last month. According to DRDO, Akash-NG is a new generation surface-to-air missile, which is used by the Indian Air Force to prevent air threats. The missile’s command control system, avionics, aerodynamic system all worked fine during the test.

About Astra Mark-2 missile

The Astra Mark-2 missile flies four times faster than the speed of sound. This missile is capable of hitting all weather, day and night all the time. Currently, its range is about 100 kilometers. The weapon missile is designed by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO).

It will replace the expensive Russian, French and Israeli BVRAAM. Currently these missiles (BVRAAMs) are imported. The size of the missile is much smaller than the rest of the missiles and the weight is also very less.

The Indian Air Force and Navy have already placed orders for 288 Astra Mark-1 missiles. They have already proved their firepower on Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter jets. Meanwhile, the final production batch of LRSAS missile has been started on 14 February 2021 in the APJ Abdul Kalam missile complex. The long-range surface-to-air missile has been designed by DRDO in collaboration with industrial partners.
