Open Distance Learning: The UGC is now going to make Academic Bank of Credit (ABC) mandatory for higher education institutions offering online and open and distance learning (ODL) courses. After this initiative of UGC, higher educational institutions providing online and ODL courses will have to compulsorily register their students with ABC. UGC is going to send a letter to all such Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) for this. At present, 58 online and 86 ODL courses are being offered to students by higher educational institutions across the country.
Know what is ABC
Giving more details in this regard, UGC Chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar told IANS that it would be mandatory to comply with ABC in the courses offered in ODL and online mode. With regard to the above subject, UGC on Tuesday all concerned higher education Will send a letter to the institutions.
Through this letter, UGC is going to inform these institutions that ABC as envisaged in NEP-2020 is mandatory and to promote flexibility of curriculum structure and end-subject, multi-disciplinary academic mobility of students in Higher Educational Institutions (HELs). It is a national level facility. This is a provision with a suitable credit transfer mechanism.
Special ID will be given
The Chairman of UGC informed that ABC provides facility to each student to open a unique individual academic bank account in digital form. A special ID is provided to each account holder. The major functions of ABC are registration of higher educational institutions under the ABC scheme and, opening of academic accounts of students, verification, credit verification, credit accumulation, credit transfer and promotion of ABC among the stakeholders.
The Ministry of Education has also directed educational institutions to adopt ABC and compulsorily generate Academic Bank of Credit IDs of students and submit their credits with ABC for programs offered in ODL and online mode. In addition, LMS of all universities offering online programs can likewise be integrated with the ABC portal.
It is mandatory to follow all the guidelines
In this regard, a help manual will be attached to the institutions of higher education to generate ABC ID for the students through DigiLocker portal. UGC Chairman Professor M Jagadesh Kumar has told the educational institutions, in view of the above, all these higher educational institutions are requested to follow the above instructions and apprise the UGC about the action taken in this matter.
