Distance PHd Not Valid: The University Grants Commission (UGC) and All India Council of Technical Education Institutions (AICTE) have announced that UGC will not recognize online PhD courses offered by EdTech companies in collaboration with foreign educational institutions. This is the second warning this year for students by the higher education and technical education regulators.
Earlier in the year, the UGC and AICTE had warned their affiliated universities and institutes offering PhD courses in distance learning and online mode in collaboration with ed-tech companies that no compromise in the degree criteria would be accepted.
The UGC said, “In order to maintain the standards for awarding Ph.D degree, it is mandatory for all Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) to apply to the UGC for conferring Ph.D degrees, in accordance with a joint order issued by UGC and AICTE. Follow the rules and its amendments.
In the notice, students and general public have been advised not to fall prey to advertisements for online PHd courses by edtech companies in collaboration with foreign educational institutions. “Such online PhD courses are not recognized by the UGC. Interested students and general public are requested to verify the authenticity of PhD courses as per UGC Regulation 2016 before taking admission,” the order said.
