There is bad news for medical students forced to leave their studies in Ukraine and return to India amid the war with Russia. Union State Health Minister Bharti Pawar said in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha that ‘National Medical Commission has not allowed this’. Without the approval of these NMCs, these medical students who returned from Ukraine will neither be able to get transfer to any Indian medical college, nor can they be accommodated.

No such provision in IMC and NMC Act!

Union Minister of State Bharti Praveen Pawar told in the Lok Sabha that there is no such provision in the Indian Medical Council Act 1956 and the National Medical Commission Act 2019, under which medical students returned from abroad can be transferred to medical colleges in India. Therefore, the decision of the states to give place to these students in their medical colleges has not been approved by the NMC.

FMG rules apply to medical practitioners from abroad

The minister said that ‘students/graduates pursuing medical studies from abroad are either covered under the Screening Test Regulation 2002, or under the Foreign Medical Graduate Licensing Regulation 2021’.

More than 400 students have got admission in West Bengal?

Has the West Bengal government admitted more than 400 medical students returned from Ukraine in the state’s medical colleges? On this question, the minister said that ‘there is no information available with the Medical Education Regulatory Body in the country i.e. National Medical Commission.’

According to official sources, within the last two years, about 40 thousand medical students studying medicine in Ukraine and China have returned to India. The reason for returning from Ukraine is Russia Ukraine War, then the reason for returning from China is Corona epidemic.

More than 400 students have got admission in West Bengal?

Has the West Bengal government admitted more than 400 medical students returned from Ukraine in the state’s medical colleges? On this question, the minister said that ‘there is no information available with the Medical Education Regulatory Body in the country i.e. National Medical Commission.’

Significantly, on 29 April, the Supreme Court directed the NMC to prepare a plan for training these MBBS students affected by war and epidemic in medical colleges of India. For this, the court had given two months to the commission. In a circular issued in March, the NMC had given these students who returned from abroad the freedom to complete their internship in India. Provided they clear the FMGE Exam.
