UPSC: The hard work put in by the individual pays off and this has been proved by Ramesh Gholap – a bangle seller who overcame all odds to become an IAS officer. Ramesh Gholap’s father Gorakh Gholap used to run a cycle repairing shop. The upbringing of this family of 4 members was very difficult. However, after a few days, his father’s health deteriorated and there was a lot of loss in business.
After this, Ramesh Gholap’s mother Vimal Gholap started selling bangles by going to the nearby village. In the meantime, Ramesh Gholap got polio in his left leg. Ramesh and his brother used to go with their mother to sell bangles. There was only one primary school in Mahagaon.
Later Ramesh Gholap went to Barshi with his uncle for further studies. His hard work towards studies made him the favorite of the teachers in the school. In the year 2005, when he was giving his class XII examination, he got the news of his father’s death. Later Ramesh Gholap had secured 88.5 percent marks in this exam.
Ramesh did his D.Ed so that he could become a teacher and help his family financially. In the year 2009, he started working as a teacher. While working as a teacher, he made up his mind to prepare for UPSC. After this, leaving the job of a teacher in 2010, started preparing for the UPSC exam. In the year 2012, Ramesh Gholap had secured 287th rank in the UPSC examination.
